Being a big fan of television series (ranking from hospital drama such as ER or Grey's Anatomy to recent success Glee) I musty confess that I've become a true addict to Mad Men. Since episode One, it was clear that it was going to be something previously unseen on television. Now we're already ending Season Four and it did not lose charm, perfection and sheer beauty.

Also, look at this season's Sally Draper (a girl!) outfits: makes me want to make a raid in her wardrobe or at least steal some of the ideas.
This year's fashion is full of references to Mad Men: Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton has shown some marvelous dresses, with full circle skirts and floral designs. Prada took inspiration also from the hairdos of the Madison Ave.ladies. Pointy kitten heels (with a bow!) are back in first row, swing coats and elegant purses will be seen a lot more this winter.
Although, there is a small problem. The whole 60s scene with its waspy waist skirts and dresses doesn't go on well with my current waist proportions.
So, I would have to learn sewing and buy some of the gorgeous vintage fabrics that can be found on eBay. Or find a good dressmaker, one who would be able to make the perfect dress just from looking at a picture from a magazine. Or, the easiest solution of all, find a really good corset, that will make me fit in one of those dresses! I notice that retro lingerie is back too, paired with lace, which is another among the great fashion comebacks this year.
I'm a bit at a loss: I've been reading that exercising isn't directly proportional with waist centimeters loss. I should cut down on pasta, bread and cakes and increase the consumption of protein (whether it is shakes or meat - in particular chicken and poultry). I should forget all those lovely pralines in heart-shaped boxes and step on a treadmill. I should forget stiletto heels and wear some hideous shape-up trainers on my way to work?
But then, what is a small sacrifice of 3 months compared to a gorgeous Betty Draper style dress? Or shall I just go for a Joan Holloway style and remain curvy and happy?

It is my position: the women of the left, and the women of the right, have much more in common than anything one thinks!

Do the women of the left WANT to kill babies?
No! They want to save babies not yet born from a life of misery. How? They say, by making it easy for pregnant women to "let go" of pregnancy. This way, babies are not born to anything less-than a responsible and loving mother and environment which really wants this new life.
Similarly, conservative women want the same thing, without the destruction of a living being, once that being is created.
They argue: a baby being chased in the womb by a probing needle designed to suck their brains out, will "run" as much as they can run in the womb. Video is solid evidence of this sad fact. To say that a "running fetus" attempting to save it's life is not alive, is absurd!
Who is right?
Let's not focus on who is right. Instead, let's focus on the common ground of all women. What is that? It's this: "All babies deserve a secure and loving upbringing." All women want all babies to be loved, secure, and safe!
What's the answer?
As far as the conflict goes: There is probably not a good answer. What is the immediate answer for improving the plight of babies? It may be cooperation on the points for which there is agreement between left and right.
Like what?
A safe environment! How can that be improved? If more mothers, regardless of their "Family Status", are able to control their situation by the amount of money they make, then how can both sides of the argument help them do that?
In other words:
"Mothers who make more money, will find it easier to provide a loving, secure, and safe environment for the baby."

True Or False? Black Women Can't Grow Long Hair

The answer is FALSE!
But many people feel that Black women can't grow hair past their shoulders. A good friend of mine even told me that her own mother insisted that her hair "just doesn't grow!" But when she stopped chemically altering her hair, it grew longer than she's ever experienced.
It is SO widely believed that our hair doesn't (some go as far as to say CAN'T) grow long that someone I know personally actually considers hair that stops right at the back of the neck to be...long!
Wow!! LOL!
During the days when I used to do hair on a professional level, a few of my female clients would say to me something along the lines of, "Cherie, my hair just doesn't grow!" and I would reply to them with, "Oh yes it does! If your hair wasn't growing then you wouldn't need to come see me every 4-6 weeks for a touch-up!"
And then I'd go on to explain that as fast as their hair was growing at the roots, it was also breaking off on the ends from all of the combing, styling, hot tools, etc.
The truth of the matter is...our hair DOES and CAN grow and grow long. I've seen women (who didn't have locs...some even relaxed) with hair down their backs but sadly, it is a rarity. It is SUCH a common belief that our hair doesn't grow long that anytime a woman does have hair longer than to her shoulder blades, the question of her race (what's she mixed with) and/or whether or not the hair is "all hers" is raised.
But unfortunately many Black women will never get to know what it's like to have hair that is longer than where the nape of their neck ("kitchen") is or beyond the shoulder blades and for most of my life, that was my story.
I'd get my hair relaxed and then it was like a vicious cycle...it would grow and get about right to the shoulder blade area and then all of a sudden, out-of-the-blue and without warning, my hair would seemingly STOP growing and start breaking off on the ends something awful! I could never get past that threshold for some odd reason. But in all actuality, I came to realize that my reasons were not all that "odd" after all.
So what are some factors in lack of visible length and/or hair growth?

1. Chemicals
2. Medications
3. Poor Diet
4. Stress
5. Excessive Combing/Styling
6. Excessive Use of Heating Implements
7. Styles Done Too Tightly
8. Hormonal Imbalances

There are others I'm sure. During the time I was relaxing my hair, MY biggest culprits were the chemicals, styling, heat and I believe also, poor diet.
But eventually, I ended up with hair down to my waist!
Now how many women of African descent really experience that level of length with their hair without some... AHEM... assistance - if you know what I mean?
And again, it's NOT because our hair doesn't or can't grow... but it's usually because of other factors... things we do or don't do. If you are a woman of color who desires hair that grows long but until now you haven't been able to achieve that, take a look at the aforementioned list of culprits and check off any of the ones that you think or feel may be affecting your hair.
Once you've identified YOUR culprit(s) make the necessary changes where and when possible, such as changing a poor diet to a healthier one, if you're using chemicals on your hair consider no longer using them or using them less frequently, etc. Some things may be out of your control such as any medications you may be taking that have side effects of hair loss.
But what you can control and change... change!

Personally, I think some people think this information is more important than it actually is. While knowing my hair type helped some, it hasn't changed my routine by much. Also, it's vital to understand that one type is not better than another. All types have disadvantage and advantages. The 3 curly hair types are:
Straight Hair - Type 1
This refers to hair that is straight with no wave or curl. It can be easy to manage and it can difficult to manage, particularly since it is difficult for straight hair to hold a curl.
Wavy Hair - Type 2
This refers to hair that forms the shape of an S and sticks close to the head. It has three sub types that detail the texture of the curl. 2a is fine, 2b medium textured, and 2c is coarse.
Curly Hair - Type 3
Refers to curls that are well-defined and springy. Hair of this type has lots of body and is easy to work with whether it's straightened or styled in its natural state. It also has sub types. 3a curls are big and loose, 3b curls are medium and range from medium ringlets to tight corkscrews (sharpie size), and 3c curls are very tight corkscrews (pencil or straw size).
Kinky Hair - Type 4
Refers to hair that is tightly curled with a visible curl pattern. It includes 2 sub classifications. 4a curlies have curls that form an S pattern and 4b curlies have curls that form a Z pattern. You can tell which one you are by pulling out a strand of hair and examining the curl.
In terms of this classification, I have a few types throughout my hair and that is actually very common. I am 3c in the top front, 4a in the middle (this is the majority of my hair) and 4b in the very back left side of my head.
