How To Feel Better About Yourself in 24 Hours

By Patrick Edwards

How are you feeling today? Would you like to feel better tomorrow? If so, here's some good news: You can feel great in just 24 hours by making small changes in your diet and lifestyle.

These changes don't require you to do anything extraordinary. In fact, these are the little rules that we know we need to live by for optimal health and happiness, but which get shoved aside by our daily routines.

Try them out for a day, and feel the difference!

Start Your Day Off Right

Look at your usual breakfast choices. Could they be healthier? Do you skip breakfast in an effort to save calories, or because you don't like to eat first thing in the morning?

Your breakfast kicks off your metabolism for the day. If you run on empty all morning, your metabolism will slow to a crawl. You'll also find yourself starving by lunchtime, making it more likely that you'll overeat.

Give your morning a healthy start by preparing a nutritious breakfast of turkey bacon, eggs, and fresh strawberries.

If you'd prefer something more portable, mix up a smoothie using silken tofu and various fruits.

If you're a light eater in the morning, at least have some peanut butter on whole grain toast.

The important thing is to get a dose of nutrition to get your metabolism in gear and make you feel better all day long.

Stretch and Relax

Mornings are a great time to stretch your muscles and prepare yourself to deal with the stress you will encounter during the day.

You can do stretching and relaxation exercises before you get out of bed, or after you eat breakfast.

Sit down in lotus position and gently stretch your arms, hips, and back. Do head and shoulder rolls to relieve any tension that built up overnight. Then straighten your legs and stretch them one at a time.

Return to lotus position and close your eyes. Feel your stress draining away along with the muscle tension. Breathe deeply, and hold each breath for a count of five.

Do this for five minutes while you visualize the tasks you would like to achieve that day.

Get Hydrated

Once you're ready to head out the door, grab some drinking water to take with you. Most of us go through our days in a state of mild dehydration. Medications and health conditions can make dehydration even worse.

Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water. It's best to drink throughout the day, perhaps sipping on a 32 ounce cup of water all morning, then refilling it at lunch and drinking the rest over the course of your afternoon.

You might find that you need to make more trips to the bathroom, but that's a sign of proper hydration. It means your body is letting go of retained fluid and flushing itself clean.

Get Energized

Snacking is an important way to keep your energy level high. Look for snacks that pack a lot of nutrition into a handful of calories.

Almonds are an excellent choice because they contain protein, healthy fat, and healthy carbs. Low-fat cheese or yogurt is another good choice. Raw fruits and vegetables give you plenty of vitamins and minerals for a low calorie cost.

Try to eat a snack every two hours to keep your blood sugar stable. This will prevent cravings and help you feel full until your next meal.

Have a Slow, Healthy Dinner

By dinner time, you've put in a full day. You might be feeling tired or emotionally exhausted. Instead of binging on comfort foods, give yourself a variety of tasty but nutritious foods that will keep you feeling good all evening.

Serve up some lean protein like roasted chicken or lean ground sirloin. Add a colorful side salad filled with your favorite seeds and veggies, and have a cup of whole grain pasta on the side.

Be sure to skip the alcohol and caffeine with dinner; both can interfere with the quality of your sleep.

Go for a Walk

A little after-dinner activity can help you calm your mind and loosen your muscles. Exercise also helps you sleep better at night, and good sleep is a vital part of feeling great tomorrow.

Since you're just starting out, your goal should be to get 30 minutes of cardio activity.

If you're not accustomed to exercise, take it easy with a walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park. If the weather's bad, stay home and dance around to your favorite music.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Now that you've exercised, hydrated yourself throughout the day, and avoided late doses of caffeine and alcohol, you're all set to have a good night's sleep. A little more stretching and relaxation can help clear your mind of racing thoughts.

If noise or light interfere with your sleep, invest in some inexpensive ear plugs and a sleep mask. These might feel a little awkward at first, but the deep sleep they bring is well worth it.

Also, give yourself enough time to get a full night's sleep. Most of us require between 8 and 10 hours a night. If you've been operating on significantly less, you might be surprised by how refreshed you can feel with just a little extra sleep.

Selling Yourself on Self-Confidence

By Travis Giauque

Remember that new idea that slid across the canvas of your mind not too long ago? Where did it go? What did you do with it? I believe images like those happen to thousands of people everyday. However, the reaction to such thoughts and ideas can differ drastically. Some recognize it and act on it. Some recognize it and dismiss it as impractical. And some recognize it but don't know how to move on it. Why doesn't the last person know what to do with it? They most likely believe in the new idea, can see how great of an idea it can be, but freeze when it comes to moving forward.

Often times the response of an individual may be, "I don't know how to do that". Or they sell themselves short by stating, "I wouldn't know what to do if... ", and fill in the ending with some problem or dilemma that would need to be solved, even though such a problem doesn't currently exist in the moment. Why might an individual think this way? This type of thought process indicates a lack of Self-confidence. Once you believe that you can overcome whatever is placed in front of you, or accomplish any great achievement, or create any great successful product or company; you will be successful! You need to recognize the power you have within you.

You are a supreme creation. You have every capability currently within yourself to accomplish any, and all, of your dreams. You are not perfect, but it's important to note that this fact only aids to your advantage. Recognizing that you have flaws and hurdles to overcome makes you more humble. Humility leads one to know that they can't rely solely upon the efforts of themselves. You will achieve all that you desire when you know that you don't need to know everything. All you need to do is believe and do what you can. Everything you need to succeed is all around you right now. And what you don't currently have, you don't currently need, but it will be brought to you as the need arises.

To incubate self-confidence in your mind, one needs to know that it is possible to achieve perfection without being perfect. In other words, you have to believe that you can create an overwhelmingly successful company despite imperfections. The solution to any dilemma, if it ever becomes real, will present itself when needed as you seek for it. Essentially you need to sell yourself on self-confidence.

Does the thought of the word "selling" create feelings of anxiety within you? Does the thought of having to sell anything make you uneasy? Don't worry about it. Think for a minute about your selling situation. You are selling to nobody else but yourself and you already now that your "client" wants to buy. You will succeed.

Here is a step that I have been taught that assists in your personal growth in clearing your self-confidence hurdles. It is what I call a "Power Phrase". A power phrase is a one-lined sentence that you generate specifically to your difficulty. It may be for an instant opportunity or for a long-term opportunity. It may apply to attaining one's desired weight, or self-perception, or personal interaction with others. It can be for any aspect in your life that you desire to improve. It needs to start with "I am", or "I will" - a powerful and commanding beginning that indicates surety. It then describes the item you desire to overcome in a positive frame of mind. And lastly, which is very important, it ends with the words "thank you" - repeated three times.

For example, if I wanted to be confident in my ability to be more patient with my children, I might form a Power Phrase like this: "I will be happily patient today with my children. Thank you, thank you, thank you." Once the phrase has been personally defined, it needs to be repeated out loud at the beginning of each day. It also should be repeated at every moment that a doubt intrudes your thoughts, attempting to discourage and undermine your confidence in moving forward.

As you define and implement the Power Phrase tool, you will begin to notice a change in your thoughts, behaviors, and actions. You are actually changing your subconscious beliefs that hinder you from achieving that new idea that first came into your mind. Recognize this and know that your self-confidence has increased. Remember, you have nothing to lose at selling yourself on self-confidence. Define your power phrase, apply it consistently, and you will see the results as defined in your phrase. More importantly, you will see a more confident you.

Having Pleasure Without Guilt

By John Kenneth

The road to self-improvement can be a bit difficult and if not geared well the action of poor self-image can always perpetuate itself. Therefore being strong-willed is the way forward as to ward-off the tendency of keeping replaying the old patterns of blame, guilt and self denigration. These three behaviour traits can be overcome by speaking well of yourself as well as treating your body well, because everything we do affects everything else and besides it is the only one body you have got, so give it some nourishment and exercise it well.

It is good to learn to praise yourself each time you accomplish or do something right as it is good to acknowledge your valve and perhaps go an extra mile and give yourself a pat on the back. The other behaviour traits such as comparison of yourself with others, non-acceptance of compliments and also starving ourselves of luxuries unnecessarily can lead to constant poor health, therefore try to be on the positive side and accept compliments and on the other hand also give compliments too, and when given a compliment, as obvious it is good to say, "thank you," or words to effect that.

When it comes to giving compliments, well it is good to recognise the beauty of others and it is one of the easiest ways to feel good about yourself. Another important thing to do is get yourself around people and also work on having pleasure without guilt. This way you can be much happy about yourself and be that kind of person you ever wanted to be.

Depression and Procrastination - The Terrible Duo Challenge

By Odessa Flores-Lemence

Virtually, people have at least dawdled with the procrastination process. Some even made it a way of life. Depression and procrastination appear to be a bothering phenomenon. The link between the two is connected and the lack of action simply correlates with one another.

In a broader view, procrastination and depression has been associated to several organizational and societal issues. Procrastinating is an inertial process where one subsequently do what one has done before and continues the pattern. Unless having the motivation to break from it, procrastination will devour ones self and eventually lead to a feeling of depression.

On the other hand, when one feels depressed, depression may overshadow all interests which leads to slow progression towards a goal. Depression is a common reaction to events that seem overwhelming or negative. The signs and symptoms of depression and the severity of the problem vary and the significance of the precipitating event.

So, the question now is "Which really comes first? Depression or procrastination?"

Some signs and symptoms of procrastination.

A lack of self-control is one bad habit to procrastinate. Finding oneself setting aside important tasks for an insignificant exciting activity might eventually lead to continuous practice on the inertial process.

Lack of organization wherein what needs to be done first would actually land to incomplete tasks. Less productivity may lead to lesser job contribution that would result to low effectivity.

Introducing negative ideas such as "I don't want to. I couldn't do it. I feel tired. I don't feel like it. It's too scary." blunt exertions towards ones achievement.

Signs and symptoms of depression.

Emotional symptoms can include feelings of tiredness, sadness, emptiness, or numbness. Behavioral signs include irritability, inability to concentrate, difficulty making decisions, loss of sexual desire, crying, sleep disturbance, and social withdrawal. Physical signs of depression may include loss of appetite, weigh loss, constipation, headache, and dizziness.

Overcome procrastination.

The first thing to overcome this procrastinating process is to stop and address the problem right away! Consider intelligent ways to respond. If the problem is self-control, learn some disciplinary actions. Regulating this destructive habit is identifying the root cause issue. Practice some time management skills that would help find ways to reach ones goals and tame ones time.

Approach for depression.

Perhaps the best means in dealing with mild to moderate depression might be exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy, organizing and focusing, and acceptance of the effects of depression suffered, which reduces how much one can accomplish.

Making the Best of Your Time With a Schedule

By Alice Coaxum

Time is one thing that we cannot save for later. We simply cannot go back and use leftover time. Once it passes it is gone so it is best to use it wisely while it is here.

If you find that you are having trouble trying to fit everything you need to do in a day, week or even a month then a schedule may be just what you need.

To best maximize the time you have you need to first figure out everything you need to get done.

Start by creating a monthly schedule that covers Sunday through Saturday and has the days broken down by hours.

Then you will want to block out times for sleeping, bathing and dressing, hair styling and make up and fill in daily meal times. These are set times that you will not be available to do anything else so by filling these in first you help ensure that you do not make a mistake with scheduling your time.

Next you will want to write everything down that you need to get done in a month. Include Dr. appointments, work, exercise, meal preparing, studying or reading and any other activities you participate in.

If you work from home you may want to even break down a list of all the activities you need to do to work from home and place this on the schedule as well. This list will vary from person to person.

Having a schedule can keep you from scrambling to get things done and getting overwhelmed.

Now you need to give each item a number from one to ten, prioritizing each activity. Those labeled from numbers one through five are the items you want to put on your schedule first, things that must be done on a daily or weekly basis.

Finally place the items from six to ten on your schedule. Some of these activities may be things you only do every two weeks or even once a month so schedule accordingly.

Be sure to schedule time for relaxing and spending time with your spouse, children or family.

Do not feel bad if you accidentally go off schedule from time to time. Life happens and sometimes the day does not go exactly as planned and you may even have to go back and revise your schedule, but if you are having trouble getting things done a schedule can be a great tool to help you stay on track.

It's All A Question of Balance

By Allen Jesson

Life is really just like a race at an athletics track. You arrive and before you know it, the starter's gun has been fired and you're off and running. Well, just lying there initially, then crawling, then walking and then you start to run. But you find that there are other runners involved in your 'race around the track'. Yes, it's a relay race and you actually have four runners.

As in any relay race, you cannot win unless all four runners complete their mission. So it is with life. There is no point in being healthy, wealthy and wise, if you're not happy. No point in being happy, wealthy and wise if your health fails. I'm sure you get my point. Life is a question of balance and your job is to make sure that you get all four runners over the line. You've got to make sure that all of your four runners complete their leg and don't drop the baton along the way. For example, there's no point in working 100 hours a week to make loads of money, only for your heart to give out way before it's sell by date. There's also no point in making a load of money at the expense of others. Or dying ignorant. You won't find enlightenment and happiness there. So, enough examples, I'll keep this one short. The secret is:

"In the race of life, to get all of your runners over the line. Not one, not two, not three, but all four".

(The runners are better known as being Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise).

Daily Planners and Organizers

by Nicole Roberts

Many people find it difficult to meet the expectations of their teachers, families, and jobs. The use of daily planners and organizers is one step in the right direction when it comes to completing necessary tasks. These planners can be found in a small notebook format that can be easily carried with you throughout the day. It can be beneficial if you learn to depend on this type of item. You will see the success you can achieve within just a few days of using one.

Daily planners should be written in often to keep track of any upcoming events. All of your assignments, tasks, and deadlines should be recorded in these books so you do not forget to work on anything. You should refer to the organizer several times throughout the day, just to be sure that everything you need to take care of has been completed. The worse thing that can happen is a missed deadline due to not checking your planner.

When you write in your daily planner, be sure you are thorough. State the dates, times, and locations for meetings that you need to attend. In-depth information should be written regarding assignments. You do not want to refer to the planner and then have to look elsewhere for all the information you need when it can also be stored within your organizer.

You can choose to use daily planners and organizers to keep track of multiple areas in your life. If you want to do this all within one planner, consider keeping it organized well so that you can properly remember what need to be done. Writing with different colored ink for each life area is beneficial. For example, writing in red pen (which symbolizes love) when you are recording a family occasion, event, or task can help you select these in the future. Tasks related to work can be in green (which can be easily remembered because it is the color of money), while school assignments can be written in blue (which really has no connection...but it's just another color to help differentiate everything you need to do).

Make use of all the sections offered in daily planners. There is typically a monthly calendar, as well as individual pages for the days or weeks. Short descriptions can be placed on the calendar, and then you can expand on the item within the day or week pages. Addresses can also be stored within some daily planners and organizers. This will help you keep contact information on you at all times.

Creating goals and to-do list within your planner is also effective. The main idea behind this book is just to remind you not to forget anything. There are sometimes small tasks we need to do such as pick up milk, run by the post office, or send out a memo. These activities may not need a large section of your planner to remember them, but they can still be jotted down in a daily list so they are not forgotten.

How to Make a Potential Employer Fall in Love With Job Searchers

Do the Right Things Right
By Susan M. Heathfield,

See More About:

    * targeted resumes
    * cover letters
    * job searching
    * hiring employees

Looking for ways to impress a potential employer? Want to make your resume or job application stand out from the pack? During one two week time period, I reviewed 485 resumes and applications for 18 different positions. I interviewed 23 candidates and brought six back for a second, more intense round of interviews.

Believe me, I can tell you what rang my chimes. Some of this advice may surprise you. Some may even make you angry because it doesn't seem fair or right to you. I can't guarantee that all employers will agree with me, but why take a chance in this employers' market?

* Apply for jobs for which you qualify. My "no" pile of applications is increasingly made up of people who don't even remotely qualify for the advertised position. These job applications frequently consist of a resume in an envelope. Why waste the paper, the stamp and the time? If you find yourself applying because it's an area of work you might want to get into, or think you'd like, don't bother.

Unless you can make the stretch and fit between your qualifications and background and the described opening, you are wasting your time. Each application or resume gets less than five minutes of my time. You need to quickly qualify yourself as a potential candidate because the employer doesn't have or take the time to do it for you.

* Write a targeted cover letter that introduces your key qualifications and highlights your "fit" with the position for which you are applying. Address the letter to the person conducting the candidate search, when known. And, no, don't presume familiarity and write, "Dear Susan." Until I know you, my name is "Ms. Heathfield." Additionally, the cover letter needs to specifically address the available position. Spelling and correct grammar do count. So does the spacing of words on the page, an attractive overall appearance, and the "feel" of the paper. Online applications, which are the norm these days, must be targeted and formatted appropriately. Pay just as much attention to spelling, grammar, and appearance.

* Target the resume to the job. Would you like to know how many people are looking for a "challenging opportunity to utilize my skills with a progressive employer who will provide opportunities for growth?" Don't even ask; the answer will break your heart if this is how you routinely describe the position you seek in your resume. Even more importantly, in this day of instantaneous electronic publishing, no one needs to photocopy 100 resumes at an instant print store. Customization counts. Customization is everything when you are looking at substantially different opportunities, too. Say, you are looking for a training position or a marketing position. The identical resume won't sell your skills for either field.

* Lead with your strengths. What makes you different from 40 other applicants? On your customized resume, start out with the background and experience most important for the position you seek. The stage of your career is also highly relevant to the placement of information on your resume. If you are just graduating from college, lead off the first portion of the resume with your education and degree.

A seasoned veteran will start with an accomplishment summary and then list jobs, titles, companies and responsibilities chronologically. A network administration applicant should lead with his or her certifications (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and list software and hardware experience (Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server) before listing jobs and education. The key is to make it easy for the resume reviewer to see that you are qualified for the position. You want your resume in the coveted "yes" pile awaiting an interview or phone screening.

Success at Work : Techniques : Taking Initiative

By Stephen Bucaro

Do you have to constantly nag at your kids to do things? Why can't they clean up their mess and get ready for school without being told? Now think about your boss at work. Does your boss always have to tell you what to do. Does your boss have to treat you like a child, or do you take initiative?

Employees who need to be told what to do are said to be "reactive". They do something only after the boss tells them to, or after the need to do something has been pointed out to them.

Employees who do what has to be done and solve problems before they arise are said to be "proactive". Bosses like employees that are proactive and willing to take initiative.

There are many advantages to taking initiative at work:

- By taking initiative you'll gain skills and learn more about your company and the market it serves.

- You'll be less bored at work because you won't be stuck in the same old routine.

But before we learn more of the advantages, let's consider some of the dangers of taking initiative at work.

- Is the problem or task within your area of responsibility? By taking initiative in an area that is outside your area of responsibility you could be trespassing on some else's turf. Before taking on a task outside your normal area of responsibility you should find out who's responsibility it is and involve that person.

If a fellow employee is swamped with work and you are facing a lull in work, ask them if you can help. But don't assume they will welcome your help. Some workers think greater job security is achieved by being behind in their work. They may feel that you are threatening their job security.

- By taking on an additional task, will your boss think you don't have enough work to do and you're looking for more? If this is a possibility, make sure your boss understands that the lull in your work is only temporary, or that you're taking on the extra task to avoid boredom and learn something new. If you're not careful, the extra task could become part of your job.

- Consider your company's culture in handling failure. Is it a "cover your ass" organization where people try to distract attention from their own failures by trying to focus attention on their coworkers failures? Has the company reprimanded workers who took initiative and failed in the past?

A company that punishes failure will stifle initiative and innovation. Workers won't want to do anything new for fear failure. If a company wants to increase initiative and innovation, they have to reward effort and embrace failure.

Despite these dangers, the rewards of taking initiative are great:

- You'll gain skills and knowledge about your company and the market it serves, making you a more valuable employee. When the economy recedes and the company needs to layoff workers, who do you think they'll keep? The individual who is more versatile in the different functions of the organization.

- You'll achieve more independence when you demonstrate that you have the organizations interests in mind and that they can trust your judgment in solving problems.

- You'll gain skills and market knowledge that will make you a more valuable commodity in the labor market. Workers who only do their own little job are not aware of opportunities outside their company.

There are dangers in taking initiative at work, but in an organization with a healthy culture, the the rewards of taking initiative are great.

"Dressing up for the Success Interview"

by career sonline com

Prepare and practice for an interview. After the date and venue has been set, allow time for enough preparation for the big day. Remember that first impressions do last, so the way an applicant look really does matter. Employers could easily give the verdict based on the manner of dressing during the initial interview.

Better questions and service can be received if the appearance itself commands respect. It is important to consider the surroundings of the company granting you an interview. There is no reason to be over dressed or poorly dressed during this very significant day. In fact, it is a good rule of thumb to always dress appropriately for any situation. All to often appearance is glossed over. Some might say that the inner characteristics of the person matter more, but in reality, you only have one opportunity for a first impression. Make it count!

Although there are specific guidelines that can be followed, these does not apply to all states like New York for example, where people wear trendy up to extreme styles that are far away from the usual fashion rules common people know. The rule of thumb should be to wear something that could boost more confidence.

Below are the top ten do's and don'ts during an interview:

Ø Avoid wild colored nail polish before the interview. The same goes with long nails that could easily turn off some conservative employers. These should be neat and very tidy looking.

Ø Never wear jewelry that rattles and jiggles as you speak and move. Try not to wear two or more rings or earrings. Piercing aside from the ears is also a no.

Ø Professional hairdo also counts

Ø If you are a woman, wear closed shoes. Heels are very appropriate as this gives more confidence to an individual and sense of respect is also provided once they see the person wearing them.

Ø Again, for the ladies, never bare those newly shaven legs. If possible, use stockings regardless of the temperature. But make sure not to use fancy colored ones. Only use those made for neutral looking legs. These should also match the shoes.

Ø Remember that a good suit or dress brings more confidence as well. This will also allow more comfort and chance for the applicant to answer comfortably or with ease.

Ø Avoid short skirts for women. Wearing pants or leggings are a no, no during interviews.

Ø Wear the appropriate blazers just as long as they do not look fashion outdated. Do not use any leather coats or jackets.

Ø For men, the tie is still appropriate. Avoid using turtlenecks. If there is no suit and tie available, use a collared shirt or white long sleeves.

Ø Men must not use too much aftershave.

Ø Women should be using bags that are not too bright and conspicuous. These should be conservative and matching the dress.

Ø Any briefcase used must be in perfect condition.

The way a person looks equal the message he is trying to convey. During the interview, this can either become a plus factor for the applicant or big loss. Know for a fact that the way an applicant should look must be appealing, fashionable but not loud.

Consider the latest trends in the area or location where the prospective job is located. One aspect that is a part of how employer picks a new hire is based on the physical attributes of the applicant. From the way the hands were shaken, keeping an eye contact, the way the posture was maintained, the smile was delivered up to the manner of dressing is being rated already.

Regardless of your personal career background, skills, and underlying talents, if the first impression was never striking enough to make an outstanding appeal to the interviewers, nothing else counts. This can be the potential employers’ initial interpretation of how an applicant will do on the job.
